Gamification - an interview with Alli Lindemann

I sat down with Alli Lindemann, an Instructional Designer at Grantham University. Grantham is a 100% online university located in Lenexa, KS.

She told me some of what she does on a daily basis, along with the challenges she faces. Something new she is trying to implement is the addition of gamification to Grantham's courses. Take a listen here:

  1. Sarah,

Interesting interview and topic. I can say I have never heard of gamification and the possibility of it being integrated into the online classroom. As I ponder on this idea of mixing gaming and class curriculum, I think I stand with the subject matter experts in the field. I personally do not see the value added in an adult classroom maybe if targeting the younger adults (forgive the stereotype). It also seems to have a lot of working pieces that have to be figured out, i.e., themed classes, grading, badges, etc. By the time all this is figured out, it seems the next new thing or idea will be on the horizon. I would pose once implemented to have two versions of the class offered so the students could choose which learning experience they want to embark in.

  2. Hi,
This was a lovely interview. I noticed that you did not stick slavishly to the questions that most of us stuck to. I realize that Ms Lindemann presents integrating technology as a matter of motivation. She is clearly of the same mind-set as many of us who believe that participation is a significant motivator for persons to learn. The badge program she describes is something that I have heard of before; it would be interesting to know a bit more as to how she uses technology to implement that system.
Ms Lindemann seemed so smooth in her responses, did you provide the questions in advance?
